End irresponsible drinks promotions - Finnie

9.38.15am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 17th Sep 2008

Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP has called for an end to irresponsible drinks promotions and praised student organisations for taking the lead in calling for a crackdown on organisations that promote binge-drinking.

Student leaders have criticised Carnage UK, a group that organises student nights out in major cities across Scotland.

Commenting, Mr Finnie said:

“Liberal Democrats were instrumental in bringing forward laws that have been used to curb irresponsible drinking, like happy hour binge drinking. I want to see Scottish Ministers using these powers to stop companies like Carnage UK encouraging binge drinking in Scottish cities.

“I am heartened to see student leaders acting responsibly and calling for action to crackdown on binge drinking. This proves that young people are more than capable of being part of the solution to alcohol misuse and not just part of the problem.”
