Lib Dems welcome Government U-turn on forestry plans

4.01.46pm GMT Thu 19th Mar 2009

Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson Jim Hume MSP has welcomed the SNP Government's U-turn on proposals to sell off Scotland's forests to the highest bidder.

Commenting after a speaking in a debate on Forestry, Mr Hume said:

“Liberal Democrats led the campaign to save Scotland’s forests.

"I am pleased that Ministers have finally seen sense and U-turned on their brazen and reckless proposals to undermine one of Scotland’s most valuable assets.

"The SNP were naïve to underestimate the strength of feeling against these plans. The chaos created by their proposals last November plunged many land based businesses into a state of limbo.

“Ministers must now introduce a sustainable land-use strategy which takes into account the economic, social and environmental benefits of forestry."

Ends.
